Because of its economics, Wimax will be the next 4G standard to be deployed worldwide. It is far by far less capital intensive and with modifications has potential to hit speeds of 1Gbs. Majority of the Telco's in the developed world that have 3G infrastructure prefer LTE but for the majority of the world that does not have 3G, Wimax is the only option that is economically feasible. For this reason Intel and Google have enough prescience to invest in Wimax.

LTE is in its infancy and will only match Wimax at best. LTE is at least 2 years away, 2012. Plus, LTE is a network swap out. Very capital intensive...

The capacity of WiMax base stations is limited just under 80 Mb/s at this time, but future generations are expected to quickly move into the triple digits.
