It's not truly fair to compare one moving experience with the other - since they're essentially two different stories. The newer movie starring Johnny Depp is truer to the book and the older one follows a script written to move away from the original story. They're both good movies and have their own merits, but they're not really comparable in my eyes.

nah... I kind of have to disagree. whenever almost anyone hears the name willy wonka, they associate it with the original movie. I am not saying that the new one with johnny depp isn't good. but I don't think it is "classic" quality. I just think that Gene hit the role right on the nose the first time.

Lol, I have Return to Oz on dvd and I love it. :PAnyway, I still disagree with you, Burton's version had nothing gothic on it. Yes, it had the stilyzation that Burton is known for, but not "gothic" style. Well, everybody is entitled to their opinion, I guess. :)

the debate on which movie is better is like comparing a mocha: one is soothing, hot while the other is refreshing, iced. Willy Wonka &tCF is soothing, gives that same warm feeling of the first time you saw it; Charlie &tCF is new, refreshing & it keeps to Dhal's original story. Gene & Johnny are both brilliant...aces...BUT Completely Different. Gene's Willy was more the eccentric genius, where Johnny's is more childlike. both movies will always be classics so, the argument is basically moot.

return to oz was more faithful to the books but who remembers that? Same will go for Buton's version. He's a good filmaker but his version sucks. The songs were terrible. To gothic even though he is known for it. Just not a good version.

Take off your nostalgia glasses. I grew up with the original Willy Wonka movie, and I loved it, and saw it many times. I think it's a classic, but that still won't impede me to recognize the fact that Tim Burton's version is a better movie, and not just because of it's better effects or ambientation. Also, Burton's version is way more faithful to Roald Dhal's original story.
