there is no line defining what is and isn't art, simply because everything is defineable art, depending on what we consider art. we can find art in nature, in paintings, in snowflakes, in music, pretty much everything. so, the question would be better posed as "how do you define art?"

How do you define creativity? How do you define imagination? You need to define these two words more explicitly.

"...and why are we still looking at a urinal?" This person is very smart and humorous. Why is a urinal not art? I don't get it. Anyone could make art so there is no real point in having art museums! I mean our life is one giant piece of art or a giant art meuseum! Even the words I am typing right now at this very moment, are art! "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep." ~Scott Adams. Love, Me(Kitty)

Not sure I agree. Art it seems is determined by the artist. And since there is no measure of who is and who isn't an artist, then anything at all qualifies as art as defined by the artist. Now... the question is better asked: "Why is this art?" "What is the purpose for which this was created?" IMHO art should serve some purpose. The purpose for that expression is the true art behind the artwork itself. Make sense?

Art is a subjective term. What is art to me may not be art to you.

I don't think that this is an adequate explanation at all, you should read the practice and science of drawing by Harold Speed, there's a great explanation and definition for all the arts (music, painting, poetry etc)

I loved this video ... it's so true and I do also believe that art comes from the soul .. human emotions and creativity although some things have been made with creativity, they have not been made with emotion. That's where I draw the line.

mainstream materialistic art is destroying the idea of what art should be. Art should be from the soul, and well, if you want a better sum up than I can explain, just watch Terence Mckenna's message t o artists. It's on youtube. just check it out

and that is obviously your opinion. But Jackson Pollack made a career of "throwing paint" onto canvas. Some of it i like some I dont. The expression behind it is what intrigues people. However I agree with you in some ways. Sometimes art is defined by the educated or by a small group of "experts". It's is up to the person. Just cuz it is in a museum doesnt make it great.A lot of modern art, like modern music, is recycled ideas or pure money makers to satisfy those with disposable wealth.

look, ther is difference if I just throw some colors on paper, or if i paint something amazing... Modern art is more and more crap...

but aren't you contradicting yourself? To play devils advocate, yeah anybody can starve a dog (as cruel as that is) but the intent of starving a living breathing creature without remorse ( I assume) is self expression. This person is reflecting himself to others as a heartless bastard. the fact that he did it and called it art is unfortunately art. Just cuz you dont like it doesnt make it NOT art. But we have the power to dislike it and judge his expression hence judge him to make him stop.

you draw the line. What is good to you is no for others. I love trance music, but my wife cant stand it. The important thing is to accept the fact that someone will not like what you like, no matter how much you love something. Dont confuse your opinion with fact.
