Author: j
Description: March 1996Fires, floods, pollution and depopulation all threaten Venice - Italy today. The picturesque sights of sun glinting on the waves, elegant villas and ornate bridges are rarely associated with oil spills, petrol refineries and other hazards that pollute the lagoon. Neither would tourists expect to see noisy diggers dredging up mud from the canal floor in an attempt to protect buildings fro...

Saharra, I must point out that BY NO MEANS I hate Americans. I just happen to note (and many others alike these days) that lately they (dare I say, you?) do not seem to be aware of the fact that there is a world outside their borders (or,as you are used to say, "overseas"), and that such world would better be understood and listened to to ensure everybody a better life, and a good way to start would be (for many Americans, which doesn't include you, I assume) to actually learn where the world is

OH honey......edgar....you are so judgemental that you have forced me to be the same with you...and condescending. At this point I refuse to assist you any further, or dignify your tunnel vision. I have travelled, still do, all over the world. I am married to a foreigner whose parents come from even another country than his birth country. My family hails from Europe too. You clearly have so much hatred for America and Americans that I can't help but wonder what is really eating you.

I see your point, but...it will be like asking the Queen of England to give the Koh-i-Noor back to the Indians or the Iranians the Peacock Trone again to the Indians or the Parisians many art masterpieces that are currently on display at the Louvre...theorically it iwould be fair but practically it is nearly impossible to be done

dude you DEFINITELY are an American dumb; otherwise, before posting such a silly answer, you would have taken enough time to read every other comment and would have realzied I wrote something in Italian earlier on...dude (American, right?), wake up! There is a whole world out there, discover it...

Brits are so rediculous and self rightous...paaahleeese...Don't realize when you refer to "like others of your nationality," our nationality, that most of us are descendents from your country. My parents are from your country. I must admit...being raised here gives me an objective view of how Brits think they are supreme to ours and others nationality. LOL It's really hilarious considering all the trysts and beheadings that went on.

So sad... I was in Venice in 1987. So much is changing. It breaks my heart. Venice was/is beautiful, romantic the most unique and wonderful place in all of the world.I hope engineers and politicians can find a way to save it...after all...there is nothing like it in Britain.

Interesting, but inaccurate sometimes, ie the old population statistics included the islands (Murano etc) & the Lido, the new ones do not, so there is another 20,000 people to add to the city's population. Supermarkets & their trolleys do exist but why overshop when you can buy things within 5 minutes walk? Market produce is certainly fresher, less plastic packaging.Absolutely correct about the housing costs but there is an increase in families remaining as confidence returns.

Ya, like the British have room to talk mate. Why don't learn from your own history. Thats right, you chaps think you are so much the humanitarians except you have your own dark imperialistic history of destroying entire cultures. You condescending Brit, must Americans don't agree with the war. Check your facts before belligerently insult people.

Venice is a beautiful city but bears a heavy conscience. Most of the wonders that millions of tourists snap photos of every year, were stolen during Venice's thalassocracy in the M. Ages (one good example are the bronze horses at St. mark's, originally stolen from Constantinople). Please return them before the city sinks

Very good report about what's going on in Venice. Makes you appreciate it more. It's a wonderful and timeless city...a must see!

> edgarleemasters said on 10-09-2008 at 10:31:
dude, you know what? get yourself a good world map and STUDY IT CAREFULLY!!!Then maybe you'll learn something, maybe something like Venice is 1000 to 1300 years older than New Orleans and that despite yearly flooding it doesn't get hit by hurricanes. Please learn geography, otherwise, like others of your nationality, you may end up bombing place you cannot even identify on a map...no hard feelings, by the way!=)cheers

Excellent report. Thank you. I have just read Paolo Barbaro's book Venice Revealed which deals with these issues. It's such a beautiful city whose fate is bound up with its own destroyer across the lagoon.
