I honestly hope Venice can find new use in the modern world, beyond tourism. The architecture and artwork was stunning. The great history of the city is still alive and well, and I was taken aback when I saw the Porphyry Tetrarchs and Crypt of Saint Mark. The fact is that Venice has been shrinking in size and importance since Napoleon conquered the city. I can only hope that the city will regain it's importance and of course be saved from the encroaching waters of the Adriatic.

Well look at it, there's nobody there. I've been to Venice, and while it was beautiful and full of history, it made me sad to think of how the city has been rendered almost completely obsolete. When was the last time Venice financed a crusade? Or fought against a great Empire? Or made a great contribution to science? Or produced an artist like Tintoretto? The number of people who live and work there is just a fraction of what it once was. I'm not trying to insult Venice, it was beautiful.

@ted750 Can you explain the vacant, silent and dead part to the people who live, work, and visit there? It's past is worth remembering, it's present may be subservient to tourism, it's future may be underwater.

For more information about Venice I suggest the Lonely Planet Guide. Gore Vidal made a video and book about Venice called "Vidal in Venice"

This is so sad..... To think of what Venice once was..... Rich, vibrant, exciting, full of life. Think of the music and boisterous crowds that once filled those empty streets. Think of the wealth and power they once wielded, the many lives it took to build those grand edifices. Think of the great men who called it home. And then look at it now; what was once the greatest city in the world lying vacant, silent, and dead.
