What they did was not US Army standard procedure, and it appears to have been an arbitrary action on the part of the tank crew. It seems that they had no training to deal with this situation and highlights a need for the troops to be prepared for these events by Brigade Command.

What I'm trying to say is that in the absence of law, extreme measures are taken. I'm not saying what they did was right, but I returned from Iraq about a year ago and witnessed shit like this happen all the time. One often wonders why people do this and I can say with confidence it is a war mentality. When you are in a place like that doing a job like that the very humanity in you saying, "hey this is wrong" gets silenced. Same reason things like the My Lai Massacre happened in Vietnam.
