Gold is very stable, that is one of the reasons that historically it has been so valuable. Someone could take some of this attractive metal that other people wanted to buy ands store it without it decaying/tarnishing etc. But if we had a machine that could churn out loads of gold cheaply I think people would quickly decide that they weren't prepared to pay much for it
