I guess it's for riders who want to be seen with admiration. However, I think people would view the rider and bike with an opposite reaction. Like "What a jerk on that foolish bike!". He (the rider) comes home to his boyfriend and tells him how many people smiled at him. The next day the two ride together and crash into a tree.
