Who says parents have to grow up? The easy way out is to just throw an adult temper tantrum and scare the kids crapless. The loophole is to just hit them when they irritate you by not doing whatever it is you told them this time or when they make a mistake. They can't do anything about it; it's like a wrestling match between a super-heavyweight and a feather-weight. Why take the effort to think, explain, convince, be patient, demonstrate good example, ect.
