Hey if you'd like to discuss more of this we should probably pm each other because It's difficult to make so many points on a youtube page. Also we're kind of slipping from the topic of the vid.

Lol sorry for all the posts, I just want to make a few more points. There is a scene in the elevator in burton's version that shows why it's nonsensical and irrelevant in places where it shouldn't be. He tells Charlie that he can't bring his family to the factory...so why are they in the elevator? In the book it's because Wonka is going to get Charlie's family. There is no point to this scene. There's also little point to Charlie in general, he's just there to reconcile Wonka with his dad.

Planet of the Apes is a good example of why Burton's themes and style often clash with other stories. When it comes to Dahl, Burton just downright contradicts all of his themes. Sadism does not work in a Dahl story as Dahl is dry and ironic, rather than goofy and strange. Dahl is more silly and nonsensical. I think the original follows this tone much better. Because it does this, it works a better than Burton's film. It's nonsensical when it needs to be and Sensible when it needs to be.

Yea...but it's not an insane playhouse, he's not Pee Wee, he's not a man child and it's creepy to make a recluse a man child. It doesn't work out because you get the vibe that he's mentally disturbed. This is a terrible directing choice. The original most certainly did not focus on music, I actually forget sometimes that it is a musical. There is no dancing in the street, there are only 4 major songs and 1 song that is repeated (Oompa Loompas are the greek chorus-more of a story technique.)

Elaborating-August talks too much, he gives his characters back stories instead of giving them dialogue or allowing them to develop their characters with acting. Johnny Depp gives probably one of the worst performances of his career mainly because he doesn't bring enough energy to the character. (he's supposed to be an eccentric inventor) He just comes off as deflated, miserable, self loathing and mean spirited. Will continue in the next post.

Tim Burton the artist is very talented however, I think that's why he creates a good atmosphere with visual. But..that's not directing, that's cinematography. Idea wise? Hell no, he rushes the beginning, builds up no mythos of Wonka and attempts to break or disappoint out mythos by making Wonka not all that he appears to be. The reason for this is because of bad storytelling (August breaks many fundamentals in scriptwriting, bad direcing and bad acting.) Will elaborate in the next post)

I actually disagree with that, mainly because I don't think Tim Burton tells a story with the camera. Take Hitchcock for example, that iconic scene in psycho. We only see bits and pieces of it, this leads to a feeling of chaos which ultimately leads to fear and paranoia. I've never seen Tim Burton do anything like that before. He's only aesthetically pleasing. I'm not saying this as a hater or a fangirl or anything, it's just what I've noticed about his films.

Tim Buron is one of the best directors out there IMO and really creates a setting for the visuals. I felt his factor was miles beyond better idea-wise than the original (the original is still great, but looks dated unfortunately) and also looks more like the factory of an insane choco maker rather than an enlarged playhouse. Now the original was meant to be a musical and that's why it focused on music. As for Transformers, it needs the visuals to look appealing. Don't mention PotA again, please.

Transformers 2 had visuals and special effects so did Planet of the Apes. I do however think the film is aesthetically pleasing, but I don't think a re adaption is worth it. yea...some things just shouldn't be remade.

First off, I'm a Burton fanatic. Well, ok not that much of a fanatic, but still a huge fan. I like to critique movies so here's my take. The Burton one didn't blow. It had great visuals and special effects, it tried to do it's own thing music-wise, and was also more modernized and fantastical. With that said, I love Johnny Depp to death, but this can be seen as one of his worst, if not THE worst movie he was in. The original was too good to beat. it's like trying to remake the Godfather.

The original one is actually closer, it follows the exact story arc. It twists it around a bit, but it doesn't change the entire direction of the film.
