pinky is actually used quite a lot in fingerstyle, the concept of not using it, and using only those four, comes from classical guitar technique. and i think the lesson shown comes from a basic classical guitar technique routine as well.

Justin is a professional guitarist and teacher, and he's excellent. His nails are one of the tools of his craft and aren't much different than most other finger pickers. Check some classical guitarists and you'll see the same. I tried it, but mine keep breaking.
