@FijiJohn The closest thing to this I can find is that int he 17th century some doctors prescribed tobacco smoking as a cure-all.

Right, it was 1972 and the win at the Gator Bowl that had the big celebration with special attention on Gatorade. That is a HUGE difference? And the point was...? That is BS?

As a matter of fact, many doctors DID "prescribe" smoking 30 years ago. They were told it was safe and healthy (by the tobacco companies of course).

the 2nd half of this talk is MUCH better than the 1st. Start watching at 45 minutes where he gets into detail, rather than doing stuff like slamming Nixon for WIC. I hate Nixon too but blaming him for the unintended bad consequences of WIC is silly. The other problem is that it's hard to trust all of his scientific detail when he gets so many other easily verifiable details (such as what GRAS stands for) wrong, but I'll trust his work in his area of specialty and he makes a good case overall.

haha, he just said that in 1970 the Florida Gators won the national championship in football. This is an example of how inaccurate his info outside of his own area of knowledge is. When he "digresses" he starts to spew b.s.

boy he's not a logician at all. His explanation of logic is terrible and buffoonish. This guy is half legit, and half self-assured snake oil idiot. Listen to what he says, but don't make him your guru by any means. Everyone thinks they're an expert in all fields when they have an advanced degree, lol

I don't think people were being told to smoke 30 years ago by the medical establishment.

Don't be obtuse. Even you must realise that there are vast differences of opinion in the medical community. I'm not saying dismiss anything, but rather treat "Conventional Wisdom" with a grain of salt, especially where large corporations inject vast amounts of money to achieve favourable outcomes. Most MD spent a few hours at most on nutrition in 1st year and haven't learnt anything new since, so yes, keep an open mind. If you can, you seem very dogmatic.

> FinalBossDesu said on 12-16-2009 at 03:09:
What point are you trying to make exactly? You're telling me to keep an open mind by automatically dismissing anything a medical professional says. Brilliant.

> alanrlow said on 12-16-2009 at 02:15:
You sound like a Palo man after my own heart. Good on you and keep spreading the word, eventually they'll understand.

> alanrlow said on 12-16-2009 at 02:07:
Why do I live by them? Because I want to live twice as long as you, oh wait, I probably already have.. Come back and see me when YOU'RE 65 (if you're still alive) Thirty years ago doctors were recommending people smoke too, are you that trusting of the medical profession or just ignorant. Ask any medically trained person about cholesterol or the lipid hypothesis and you'll get the conventional wisdom lies too. You have a lot of growing up to do but keep an open mind and you'll get there.

Enter 2673878 in the PUBMED searchbar and you find this new researchConsuming fructose-sweetened, not glucose-sweetened, beverages increases visceral adiposity and lipids and decreases insulin sensitivity in overweight/obese humansThe full text is online and it proves that for making you fat and setting you up for diabetes fructose and HFCS is worse than glucose. (but even too much glucose isn't good)

who this presentation was amazing this guy has a lot to back his claims with.THIS stuff is bad and he didnt even touch the fact that lots of high fructose corn syrup contains things like mercury..

> jwin74 said on 12-12-2009 at 18:28:
it's a bad thing. first that it's full of fructose, second that it's liquid with no fiber, seeds, peel, etc so you can just pound it down without even getting full.

> jwin74 said on 12-12-2009 at 18:25:
yeah moderation is the key when you're dealing with poison.

> willow7371 said on 12-12-2009 at 17:21:
so is drinking 100% pure orange juice a good or bad thing?when he says fruit juices are bad, does he just mean fruit juices with sugar added?

> glummdead said on 12-12-2009 at 14:19:
I'm kind of concerned that he asked his audience if they knew what a Meta Analysis was...

> majselxop said on 12-12-2009 at 13:26:
and you're a faggot who doesn't know about moderation

> jwin74 said on 12-12-2009 at 00:24:
no need for biochemistry, it's in his own logic. at 1:14:04 he says fiber reduces insulin response and raises satiety. he's making the point that fiber reduces the harmful effects of fructose. that's like saying cigarette filters reduce the harmful effects of nicotine. hmm I can think of a better way to reduce the harmful effects. by not eating it at all. but then people will whine that they need something sweet. well, you don't. sugar addicts.

> FinalBossDesu said on 12-12-2009 at 00:09:
I guess your biochemistry research proves him wrong. Mind if I see it?
