Jimmy Page and Robert Plant from the heavy metal group Led Zeppelin are HUGE fans of Skip James. Plant said it in an interview.

why would you want to imagine he's just singing about a woman, if you know he's not? The reason black americans seem to not be able to move past history is because you cant move past something as long as some people refuse to acknowledge what happened. in my experience once a white person acknowledges the extent of what happened in the past, then that's the end of the discussion. no black person wants to dwell on these things unless we're forced to by someone trying to rewrite history.

For those who are claiming that Crow Jane is just about a woman and not about discrimination, please research the etymology of "Crow Jane / Jane Crow" and note that this video was taken in 1967.I'm one who would like to believe that he was just singing about a woman, but blues shares a lot of the aspects of African proverbs...there is usually something deeper there. In Skip James' case there is no malice. He was clearly a good man.
