The Segway is a spin-off of the iBot which is a powered wheelchair with the same balancing system, but you control it with a joystick. It also has 4 wheels and can climb stairs. A segway is a lot cheaper than an iBot though.

I have beckers MD and would love to replace my permobile with a seated segway! Trying using the tilt actuator from a permobile powerchair so that you can rise and lower between sit and stand postition. Make the seat more versitile so that part of the seat can be easily removed from it's base in order to transfer onto a toilet, chair, bed, carseat etc. Then I will buy it today! Mike

this looks cool but it would only work for paralized people who can lean back and forth

I'm with you. I'd love to see a version where you can sit or stand--maybe a removeable seat? I can still walk, but do so very slowly to avoid tripping and falling (can't get up by myself). My husband thinks a segway would be a great option.

You know as a disabled person I really get tired of NON disabled people making uninformed statements.1. You DO NOT use your feet to operate a segway, you lean your body back and forth to make it move.2. There are allot of people myself included who are not paralyzed but have degenerative nerve conditions that this is PERFECT for.I would like to see a version where you can stand and sit

if u are in a wheelchair, you may not be able to use your feet, which is how you control a segway-with ure feet!

This version might not be useful for those with paralysis but a later version could be. (Based on this one)Also this could be a good deal for elders which can also be considered to be 'disabled'I've seen a proper automated wheelchair that basically does something similar. (On discovery I think). It looks like a standard electric wheelchair but can also be used on two wheels. (Thus letting disabled people talk to others around normal eye height)

there's no way that 98% of those with paralysis can use this chair & we know it. When you are paralyzed your center of gravity changes drastically. I defy this company to show this chair used by a person with paralysis. No way! It's all wrong. the guy is using his trunk muscles while stablyzing himself with with his feet and legs. Looks cool but this thing is more for people that are too lazy to stand let alone walk. Certainly it is a chair with wheels but not a "wheelchair".
