Having sailors with weapons might actually increase the potential of fire exchange between pirates and merchant ships. You got a tiny and agile speed boat against a slow moving ship. The ones that have more to lose in that kind of a fire fight are the crews of the merchant ships (the value of a sunken pirate boat vs the value of a damaged/sunken merchant ship and her crew members).

Solution find another route and leave them alone.

I really don't know why these guys just don't carry guns. Every schooner on the Caribbean is carrying at least a rifle. Why are these big container ships with a large crew and billions of dollars in cargo not at least throwing a couple rifles in a back closet? Its ironic that the modern high school security guard is better armed than the crew of these container ships.

Yeah this need to defend there waters against foreign corperate fishing seems valid. Why not support the local economy. Insted of giving more money to people like Black Water, who has proven through out its short history that it is up to no good. Give the people a chance to earn a living!

Simple solution. Track the boats. Destroy their home ports. Soon enough the pirates become very unpopular at home. Also, send out some decoy ships, kill the pirates that take the bait. It would be pretty easy to take care of this problem if the nations of the world wanted to.

Piracy is a problem as old as the fall of the Minoan Empire around 1600 BCE.The traditional solution has always been to kill the pirates and sink their ships until the problem is reduced to a bearable level.On the other hand, when the Somalis describe it as "defending our waters against foreign fishing" then the issue takes on whole new dimensions, and becomes more than simple piracy.One has to wonder if "pirate" has become a word like "terrorist"

It's just another excuse to give money to security companies just like Sept. 11. They should give money to the local fishermen and get rid of foriegn competiton. Thos you would not have a need for the Pirates, or so it may seem.
