All time classic, original is superior to all attempts to cover it so far, timeless ballad

I always liked the mix of real instruments and synthesizers... And Madonna is ugly trash compared to Gwen, sorry.

Its amazing...in 20 short years the R&B/Soul genre has become hop-hop, and any resemblance to the former is long lost, at least to this poster...from songs about love and longing to the new lyrics of cop killing/hos/bitches/et al...Some say progress is a good thing...I seriously disagree...probably much like doo wop fans thought upon its demise...

Great tune, and Gwen certainly does sound & look great, too! As for the synths man, really, you should cut them some slack..., at that time they thought using them made the tune sound hip & very contemporary! And it doesn't sound THAT bad, not like the bubbly stuff on "Muskrat Love"! ;-)It's just now, 30 years later, they do sound dated, but that's technology, you don't see real instruments ever sound "dated", cause they are timeless...

Actually, the group is Rose Royce and not the lead singer. The lead singer name is Gwen dickey. She left Rose Royce in 1979 and was replaced by Ricci Benson. Great band indeed.

I never realized how attractive Rose Royce is/was. She has a great voice but I've always hated those ridiculous synthesizers, they don't add anything and unecessarily dates the song. I like Madonna's version the best of all the covers I've heard. The music and the arrangement creates an intense mood.
