man why dont talk shows have the same laid back approach to their musical guests nowadays? Its awesome that before they performed Letterman just kind of talked to them and let us get to know them and the history of their music.

It was recovered a couples of months ago. They played here in Sao Paulo last week and I got glad to see it being played by Buck.

Thank you for posting. Both REM and Letterman are subtly hilarious, too!

Oh wow. Michael Stipe looks really beautiful in this... almost angelic. I didn't have any idea what he looked like when he was young.

Oh R.E.M. :) I love the fact that Michael was just kinda hiding in the back while letterman talked to Peter :) way to pick a shy lead singer, guys.

Wow. Never new about this. Thanks for putting it up. I got to see their first live performance of this song in Oklahoma city back in 1986. So I thought. At least that was what Michael said before they played it. He stood way in the back with his back towards the audience. Man I miss the IRS days! Hung out with them right off stage with under 50 other fans.

I was not a Letterman watcher, but wandered in late one night and saw this live. From that point on I was an REM fan. Oct 83, I was a sophomore in high school, and I was hooked. It is great to see this again as, oddly, I have never seen a replay and probably haven't seen Letterman 10 times in the 25 years since.

Is that the Rick guitar that was stolen just a few days ago? According to Buck, it was his fave guitar and used it since the early days. Sad loss :(

I remember my brother and I saw this show on TV. I thought they were cool and was glad they played real instruments like The Beatles and The Byrds played. Next day I went out and bought "Reckoning".
