The Husker Du thing passed me right by, so I'm not able to really form any opinion of them. And I admit fully to a bias, I've always felt that any band I know nothing at all about simply couldn't have been important. That sounds terrible doesn't it?? But I guess I mean to say that "important" bands you at least know about, even if you hate them. Of course, I lived in the sticks in the 80's..Correction, Chronic Town was released in 79 on cassette, the EP ( on vinyl ) was released in 80.

Perhaps a better argument would be an REM / Hüsker Dü debate: Both bands came out at around the same time (Hüsker Dü in 1979, REM 1980), both were at the forefront & among the fathers of the new music movements in rock & pop. (alternative, college rock, punk-hardcore {especially Hüsker Dü}).

This is what separated David Letterman from all the other talk show, (chat show) hosts: He was in tune with the new music coming out in the 1980's from the get-go and wasn't afraid of putting them on his show. I remembered first seeing REM ever on TV and it was on that day on the Letterman show.Wow: It's so good to see this clip again! Good Times.

This is the REM I recall. I also recall when these guys couldn't end a song on the same beat (Bodycount) to save their lives, lol, Tyrone's OC in '81... Gee I do miss the twentieth century sometimes.

This song is where post punk became alternative."Alternative" came about because in 1981 college stations were looking for a new word to use that fall. Sorry about that, everyone...Although the industry referred to it as 'College Rock' back then. Green on Red, Dream Syndicate, Game Theory, Miracle Legion...Later subdivided into Jangle Pop.
