It's definitely real, I'm actually an undergraduate student working in his lab. The self-assembling peptides form a scaffold, something for the nerve cells to grow upon and thus reach across otherwise large gaps that resulted from injury. Just look up "Rutledge Ellis-Behnke" for the papers he's written or been the co-author of.
