you always have to see with a good instructor to tell how to practise it. never practise pilates on video if you don't know it.it's always better with an instructor who'll be able to explain the way to work. some people who don't know pilates say seeing a video it's crap, but pilates is just not moves you repeat watching a video. try it in a good studio and you will see. i'm an instructor and i have great result with herniated disc injury but always see your physiotherapist in parallel

the muscles shorten with tension over time. proper exercise releases those tensions and allows the muscle to actually become longer when released properly.
