A helmet law is pretty illogical solution. A child is hit by a car and we make policy that only applies to cyclists? What about the driver's responsibility to NOT HIT HIM.It's lazy and ineffective.Except for my helmet magically repels irresponsible drivers.

OMG Brian. I remember that day. Chris was such a wonderful kid! Very bright, and an old dear friend. After all these years that have past, I still think about him. ((hugs)) Keep on doing what your doing, because you do everything well! ~Nanci

That is right 227paddy. We ( of course) have built in responses to protect our head. It ofen works quite well. However our built-in responses do not take account of several centimetres of hard foam around our heads. So sometimes you'll hit your helmet even though you would not have hit an unhelmeted head in a similar crash.

In America, the automobile is more important than: life, freedom and happiness. My advice would be for anyone living in North America would be to never attempt to ride a bicycle because the odds are stacked way against you. Just buy a car and a cell phone and save your bicycle riding for the park and make sure you wear a helmet. Stay in your car better yet.

So this comment above was marked as spam. Not exactly very much in the spirit of the first amendment ( freedom of speech) and democracy.I urge those really interested in this issue to read the Wikipedia-dot-org article on "Bicycle helmets", which is very well researched, although tilting a bit towards the helmet sceptics. But then they are right, it seems, although still in minority within the medical and scientist professions.

Glad to see we agree on some crucial points. But cycling _is_ in most instances a safe and effective alternative for commuters, by joining the hysterical cry for helmets you are adding your voice to those that say cycling is really only for the brave. Or you might convince some people that "Hey I have my helmet on, I am safe, and I can cycle kamikaze style !"

Our passion and research has saved thousands of lives. Speed is more of an environmental concern than safety as studies show that there are fewer accidents on roads with higher posted speeds because of less differentiation between drivers. Cycling saves lives by improving the cyclist's health, reducing traffic congestion, and reducing pollution. Our efforts to promote bicycle helmet safety demonstrate a commitment to making cycling a safe and effective alternative for commuters.

Passion combined with misunderstanding or a very skewed perception of reality is a powerful force for bad. Your passion should have been about reducing vehicle speeds, and make sure drivers are held responsible when they are driving faster than the situation and locality really demands. Car-drivers kill people , 40.000 die in traffic in the US every year. Cycling saves lives, and cyclists live longer according to a growing body of research. See e.g. "The case for cycling" from cycling England
