I thought the story was her father left her when she was young and never come back, she never know why that's why she kept on waiting. Until when the water recede, she found her father boat and know that he had been dead all along (ship sunk).Or may be it's one of those thing where she never accept that he was dead until when she got old, and finally seek the truth.

yeah i know he doesnt actually come back. I think that she dies when she curls up in the boat, and is with her father in heaven...though thats my interpretation i suppose :-)

if she grows old, her father doesn't come back. it's just that the water has receded and she can walk to the boat and then curl up there and dream that she's young and he's come back again.

sonaliraj - yes, she does grow old. First she's a young girl, then a young woman, then she has a boyfriend, then she has a husband and children, then, apparently, she's a widow since she's alone, and then she dies and she's back with her father...though she might see it that way, that he's back at low tide.
