4 wheel drives are real bad in that they are so high that the person getting hit goes straight into the concrete, normal cars the bounce seems horrific but it actually absorbs a lot of the impact. YOu have a better chance of surviving if you bounce off the hood (or roof in this case) than being ploughed straight into the hard ground.

I hit a motorcyclist a year ago. I didn't see him because I was fooling GPS. It was really late and there was hardly any traffic. He was semi conscious. I was afraid to call the cops and I just left. I listened to the news and read the paper weeks afterward but heard nothing. I hope the guy lived, but I wasn't risking points on my license. .
