No way is Bench a better hitter. Piazza built his stats playing in Dodger stadium (a pitcher's park) and in a Mets lineup with littel to no protection, as has been previously noted here. Bench was part of the Big Red Machine, and was clearly not alone in the batting order. Even with these obstacles, Piazza batted .300 in nine straight seasons (more than Bench), won 10 straight Silver Sluggers, and has the most home runs of any catcher. He's the best of all time.

johnny bench is the greatest hitting catcher of all-time. and cheering your teams catcher for making a good throw to second base to catch a base stealer is not "disrespectful" it's what fans do.

As a Dodger fan, I see things much like you. But Not as a Met. Anyway, he will pick the team who buttered his muffin. The mets. Either way. Both teams showed him the door. He might as well go in as a Devil Ray.

Mike was more to the METS than just a bad thrower. He gave the METS and their fans hope, devotion and many exciting moments with the bat.Lo Duca is gone now. He will not get cheered like Mikey did. Mike is beloved. He will always be a MET. We should sign him for a one day contract and let him go out a MET

Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately people seem to only remember the late Piazza years when the only protection Piazza had in the lineup was Karim Garcia, Shane Spencer, Todd Zeile, and therefore the Mets were terrible. Piazza is one of the greatest Mets of all time ... and needs to have his # retired.

THANK YOU! Shees all these anti-Piazza people have popped up all of a sudden after he left. For Christs's Sakes, he brought us back to credibility in 98-00. He couldn't carry the team forever.Like Pedro did today (bring the Mets back to credibility) Only this time when Pedro got hurt, our GM had built a GOOD team so he didn't have to carry us like Piazza had to but couldn't from 02-04.

i'm a big met fan and i hated piazza. he wasn't clutch. he couldn't throw out a runner and he always found a way to hit into a double play, especially with the game on the line. I'm much happier with Lo Duca. He's a real, tough, scrappy catcher. Anyway, go Mets 2007
