I read this was first known as 'Camberwell Green', a part of London I went to school from 11-18. Unfortunately the area has much gone down in the world since the composer stayed there.

Yes, it had some clever but subtle "adult" humor in spots (nothing too raunchy), and I think the creators always viewed the show from a more adult humor standpoint. But at the same time, they made it easily accessible to kids; something you don't see very often now-a-days. It's the perfect blend, and why the show remains one of my all-time favorite shows. An R-rated Spongebob?!? xD Never saw the show in my life so I couldn't even begin to imagine... I probably still wouldn't watch it. xD

That explains it. But I guess the child version still had the innuendo and subtle adult humor?Otherwise I can't imagine how the transition from G to R would work out. I can't imagine an R rated sponge bob for example.

There were a few short-lived alternate episodes of R&S that were made for adult audiences (I forget what channel they aired on), but the main series that would show on Nickelodeon was intended to be primarily kid friendly.Trust me, my parents wouldn't have let me watch an "R rated" cartoon as a kid. xD

I'm pretty sure it was rated R.

Well, technically it is, but there was a lot of humor in it that was supposed to go over the kid's heads. So it kind of was and wasn't for kids. But whatever category it falls under, it's still a classic in my book.
