You could buy an oldtimer Saab, those used very similar engines.. Overhauling such an engine was however considered normal maintenance, you couldn't go 28 years without a few overhauls. Most European or Japanese cars those days do last longer without major work.

I am not fond of the idea of two stroke power for a car, but I have read that those Trabants were bulit to last (the average life span of one was 28 years). Cars made here in the United States are junk; I think the "Big Three" practice planned obsolescence. Seriously, I owned two US made cars, and they got to a point where things broken down like clockwork. It was literally cheaper to make payments a new Toyota than to keep fixing my previous car. I wish we had something that lasted so long.
