youth and youngmanhood is in my opinion their best albumn, im not so sure if its their earliest one, but i have to agree they have changed their style of music but i have to disagree with you when you say the change was for popular demand, i mean take for example how much the chilli's changed their music :)

but thats not the point they got big and popular because they changed their music and style to appeal to people who like catchy happy tunes. if a band is truly good (and KOL really is amazing) then they dont have to change their image or music, it just takes time for bands like them to become big. band like modest mouse, wilco, radiohead, of like the strokes got big by staying true to what they thought was good music.
