Father was in Okinawa fighting the Mitsubishi Zero's aboard ship. Awe inspiring stories he would tell about his experience there. God Bless our vets, and those who are no longer with us may they Rest In Peace!

Kamikaze did not destroy 1 USA Capital ship. ~36 or so ships of all types were sunk & ~368 damaged. we lost ~763 aircraft while the Japanese lost over 4,000 with some estimates up to 7,000 aircraft & 16 ships. US forces were already on Okinawa before they were attacked by large scale kamikaze attacks, so there wasn't any possibility of the land battle being stopped. 1st kamikaze attacks occurred in the Phillipines, & we were ready for them at Okinawa but they did hurt.

Now I'm looking at it, I think it might be North Carolina. S Dakota had a really compessed superstructure, and Iowa was much longer and had quite distringuishable funnels.

it looks like a south dekota cos it has small guns for a ship of it size and the hull too small for a iowa

My grandfather saw the ship next to him go down as well. Pretty intense fighting. As described below - they had a lot waiting for us in the caves on land. Really sophisticated jets and weapons under ground almost finished. They had to throw dynamite down there to get a lot of them. That's something that's rarely mentioned in the history books.

My father-in-law was a gunners mate on a 5" gun on New Jersey. He said Okinawa was really bad; one afternoon the whole fleet was under attack, they were making 30 knots, and every gun on the ship was firing at kamikazes, so much noise you couldnt hear the guy next to you. He said they barreled past a huge group of survivors, hundreds, from one of the ships, all screaming to get picked up, but every ship in the fleet was under attack and they didnt stop. It haunts him to this day. He's 86.

my grandpa was in the navy in ww2, faked his age at 16 to get in and stayed in for 23 years. the only story i know about him was when they were doing kamakazis into the ship my grandpa looked over to his friend and a piece of his front face was missing along with his eye, he just turned around and stayed shooting. my dad said he never talked much about the war until he was old, i never got to talk to him since he died when i was 5. after all he went thru he died from smoking cigarettes...

It would have been a different outcome had the Japanese concentrated more on Kamikazee attacks. But then again you can't beat the force of a Big Bomb.
