True. But, remember, Royce Gracie worked his magic back in the 90's. Since then, BJJ has exploded in poularity, and yes, it is good for self defense, and I certainly respect it as being dangerous. BUT, since BJJ is now so popular, us strikers have adapted our styles to be ready for the takedowns. The party's over. A takedown, and a strike have similarities, both are an attcack that can be defended against, and capitalized on. BJJ is very good, but like all styles, it has its weaknesses. OSS.

A difference you're not considering is that there won't be much rolling around involved if your opponent hasn't experienced grappling before. He'll be too busy having his face smashed into the concrete from under an immoveable mount to roll around.

A good shotokan black belt would have beat that dude. BJJ is really good. I used to study shotokan when i was young. I have seen it in action when I was young and when I was in Japan. Before that take down would have happened... That guy would be out cold. The strikes are brutal.

Yeah. This looks totally fake. A Shotokan karateka would NEVER charge in like that. This is a commercial for a BJJ school.

i don't mean to ruffle any feathers, cause i like both of these styles, but you can't say that a karateka wouldn't charge in. cause the practitioner makes the style, and this guy charged.

Not even close to surprised this Karate guy lost. Not only did he go charging in, unlike he should have, Jiu Jitsu is exactly the opposite of Karate. Karate is to keep your opponent away from you where as Jiu Jitsu is to keep them as close as possible, and on the ground. It's all about throws and take downs.

next time, use more legit fighters when comparing two different martial arts.and just for the record, a karateka wouldn't charge at his opponent like the shotokan guy did.

Attack it doesn't necessary, only to wait the hug and kick him before if not it's obviously that i'll be taken down.

haha good thing that where i go, we do karate, tae kwon doe (if that's how you spell it, it looks weird), jui jitsu, and judo. It's Bushi Ban. if you can find one near you go and ask about bushi ban utah (that's me, we're the best! and Connecticut) there are many martial artists that have like 3rd degree black belts in so many other disciplines, that say bushi ban is the most complete. one is eric lovelace. 3rd degree or higher in 8 different places, and 4 time world champ in fighting!
