Shihan is the certificate that allows a black belt karate practicioner (no matter which dan is) to become an instructor and therefore to open a Dojo and teach Karate

Yes, I agree. It is a very good kumite drill that has its purposes. Thanks for the response. Oss.

No, 10th Dan is the highest rank in Shotokan. Shihan is sort of an honorific title (means master instructor). A Shotokan practioner called Shihan doesn't really need to be a 10th or even a 9th Dan, as the title is mostly distinct from the dan system.

Wow...fifty years of hard training to reach 10th degree black belt! That's the real deal. There are so many fake dojos out there that hand out black belts like door prizes.I agree with another comment below - karate is good for exercise and discipline, but without lots of kumite, it is utterly worthless in a fight.

the embodiment of the art itself.... a true master of the art, he's living his life practice, enjoying the art... so what retirement? my only question is.... is that hair on his head real? if it is.... that's unreal!!

I am perfectly aware of that as I am a shotokan practioner. Shotokan-ryu and Goju-ryu are both seaprate styles of Okinawan karate though. Your last statement could be understood in a way that Goju is a sub-style of Shotokan, while it actually is not. Goju-ryu was founded around 1930 by Miyagi Sensei, a student of Master Higashionna Kanryo. So in a way Master Kanryo was indeed a founder of style that later became to known as Goju. Shotokan however was founded 5(6) years later by Master Funakoshi.
