I have to disagree with him because i leaded with hips not hands before high school and during high school i pulled a muscle in my back and was out for rest of the season after my first season i started leading with the hands and i was getting more homeruns and better hits and my back was not huritng

who doesn't teach "rotational" hitting? are you an eptein follower or mankin or nyman or the guru of all gurus englishby?there are so many views/opinions on ""rotational"" hitting that you rotational dudes need to get together and iron them out! look on the net if you want to find out about rotational hitting, find an experienced MLB hitting coach if you want the truth! nobody teaches rotational-internet hitting in MLB!

he is teaching how to swing like most of the major league hitters. He's teaching rotational hitting.

I agree with him 100%. All the great big league hitters lead with their hands. This was the very reason the Cubs got rid of Felix Pie. This is the only was to hit. Leading with your hands makes as much sense as a shortstop trying to throw out a runner at first base without catching the ball first.

> pepxxx said on 07-24-2008 at 00:18:
You are wrong. Look at every big league hitter. They all lead with their hands.

wow he's giving the hands leading hips no room for discussion. If done correctly and not all lackadaisical like he does it, you can gain an enourmous amount of power. With this type of swing, the batter has all of his power stored until point of contact, where all the power is used, not wasted before the point of contact. If the hips are already turned, what is left follow through with? nothing. Big leaguers today are just so strong that they do not need to worry about a correct swing.

My 2 cents --Hips lead hands, otherwise you cannot get power. That said, if you watch MLB hitters, the hands stay back, so that even if they are fooled by offspeed pitches, they can still hit the ball with authority to the opposite field. The best hitters hit the ball to all fields, and the opposite way hard even if fooled, because they keep their hands back.Watch video of Manny or Edgar Martinez -- classic swings where hips lead hands, and almost every ball they hit is hit hard.

The front hip just begins to open from the "closed" position, but it doesn't necessarily mean it has to come all the way open. Just a little bit to get the entire lower half started, think of it as a little bit of a running start (there are other more true forms of a lower half running start, but thats a little more complex.) If the hands are kept back in the proper position during the very very slight opening of the hips, everything should be locked and ready

Valid points AB. When people run into problems "flying open" or even think the idea is stupid, just fail to understand it correctly. Some take it to an extreme and have the hips flying open way too much because that is all they are focusing on. Of course they can't handle anything away! Proper separation is so quick, that when you do it right, it wont matter where the pitch is. We're talking less than a .1 of a second.

Another thing I would like to comment on is that I used this baseball factory group, and they really liked my swing when I used them to help me play college.

Ok, here is my dilemma on this video. I understand the hips flying but this causes like he says people to pull off the ball and to fly open. For me, everything comes together all at once, there is hands and hips are together, not like he says with hips opening then hands follow or hands start like that and then on the follow through hips follow. My hitting coach that is an assistant at NC State, has said use the backside, meaning use the hips and hands together, to keep yourself closed.
