I met and ate pizza with Harry and the band when they performed in Watertown, NY in the late 70's. This song was written and based on a little ride he took around factory street. Although he changed the names of the businesses...he used the place in the song. In concert he would often mention Watertown, NY and how he "spent a week there one afternoon." Harry will always be special to me, because as a college kid, he treated me with respect and friendship.I miss Harry Chapin, my friend.

I remember hearing Harry on AM radio in the 70's. Loved him then and love him now. One of the best story tellers - EVER!

Harry was a great musician, but, more importantly, he was a great human being. I miss him tremenously, just no one doing this kind of quality music anymore. God Bless You, and may God Rest You, Harry...we're still here fighting the good fight, and missing you so much.

This must have been filmed close to the time of his death. Still miss the man and his music.

extremely human, my dad introduced him to me. great man. he isn't usually given credit for his guitaristry (or is he) but his chord changes and melodies, not to mention the great lyrics that fit in with it perfect, can't be underrated

I love Harry, to bad he died long before I was born. When I get to the afterlife I'm going to shake his hand. :)

One of the great ballads of our times! Harry lives on in his music, which is immortal. I am thankful to have heard it.

My dad told me a beautiful story about this song. The great Harry Chapin! Another good story teller around now is Jarmes McMurtry but there will never be another Harry.

In 2004 I bought a new turntable to play my old records my daughter who was 12 at the time had never seen a vinyl record was amaze that it had 2 sides and proceeded to go thru my collection and found a live H.C. record which she then played constantly till she new all the words, she now has many H.C. songs on her Ipod and still thinks that some of my "old" music is crap Harry is the best and is converting her freinds to him. God Bless You HARRY you were one of the GREATEST

...he could use the building longer, so he said, I'm willing to sit up here and play as long as your willing to sit out there and listen. I had to go to work the next day and still had a long drive home so I left at 1am. I don't know how long he continued to play but he was still going strong at 1 and he still had a full house...he was a great humble talent...if he had an ego...he never showed it...taken too young.

This is a HC story I have to tell...it'll probably take 2 posts. I attended a concert with a date at GVSC about 90 miles from my home. There was a 30 min. warm-up act, and he came on at 9pm. There was no break per se. Each would take a bit away from the stage, while the others continued on. At 11, he did his last song. He walked to the side of the stage and was talking with some guy there. After maybe 5 minutes he came back on stage and said that he'd talked with mgm't and they said....

Harry Chapin is the greatest bard in the last few centuries, perhaps ever. Much we lost when he died.
