My favorite religious painting is of Jesus Christ as an Apache Medicine man performing this very ceremony with his painted hand raised and the deer feet rattle in the other hand. Eagle flying in the background. Fascinating video

True. There are a lot of cultures that do this now. And there were some in the past. But it has became a lot more common in recent time, especially due to the need for more education and the fact that we live longer so we don't have to have kids as early.

actually many cultures, both ancient and recent, prolong childhood thru the teens even more so than the US...many cultures don't view one as an adult till around age 20, and during the teen years a "child" does little to contribute to society...instead they play and have little responsibility...so perhaps the US isn't as different or lax as you think...

Amazing. I hope that they can still be able to do this. Young people need to learn what it means to be an adult and the ways of their ancestors. I can't stand this "prolonged" adolescence that we seem to encourage in mainstream American culture.

Trust me, many Americans are still bigoted as ever. The only difference is that they can't say it out loud in public places, thus they do it here (Zamanian's comment is an example)I have to admit though, despite the fact that I'm 1/8 Shoshone, this is pretty harsh (in a good way). I barely know my culture, but I still honor my heritage anyway.

Maybe it has something to do with them all being european in the first place? Come on now, we've all heard the Mayflower story!
