Superbe chanson. Belle à pleurer. Leonard Cohen et Bob Dylan, romantic lovers. Best lyrics & mixed emotions.

another factor is the fact that cohen and waits create these songs from scratch. they tear off a piece of their soul and translate it to auditory beauty.

I dunno. I think Tom Waits actually has tons of control over his voice, just the way he changes it from album to album kinda makes me think he means every little note and sound in his voice. I see what everyone means though, these guys might not sing perfectly in tune or really powerfully, but they have such distinctive voices. I mean you know it's Leonard or Tom the second you hear them, but really professional singers all sound the same.

I agree with you, mlszeliga. People like Cohen and Waits don't have a great range, the smoothest voices, or the ability to jump from note to note, but their voices have a certain textures and emotions that set them apart from others, making them great.

I meant "gifted" as in on a technical level, which is certainly not synonymous with what makes a performance great. If pavarotti had sung this it would have been horrendous. Cohen, Dylan, Macgowan, Waits, etc. have extraordinary talent for using their voices to speak to their audience through their songs and stories, the way they meant them to sound. But the thought of them singing in 4-part harmony evokes nightmares. Actually, that might be brilliant...

Wouldn't you have quiet time after the song ended anyways?....Either way, it's an incredible song.

gosh this song is just so beautiful. i'm not sure what is considered a "gifted" singer and what isn't- i feel like certain singers speak to me and others don't. leonard cohen's voice definitely does something to me that i can't put into words, so i would consider him to be "gifted."
