@HLSDK rheostat is another word for 'resistor' he's talking about the potentiometer attached to the throttle and brake pedals.

@cdlmn63 Never rheostats, they are incredibly low-tech. The power most likely (where I live) comes from a combination of nuclear and coal.

dynamic acceleration and wow dynamic breaking all controlled through a reostat simple now where does the base power come from a gas or des. motor ???????????????????

Electricity is cheaper than oil actually. The tesla roadster only uses $5 worth of electricity to "fill up" while a gas car typically takes $40 for the same number of miles. Also, if they sold it as a kit, it would be a boon for home mechanics, simply add the wheels, batteries and control system.

Cool idea, but good luck to any home mechanic.

that's what i was thinking. it'll be like now when you need to refule your gas car except you replace your dried batteries for a set of charged ones instead.

most of the point of standardised batteries and the 'betterplace' people is the battery changing is totally automated in a few minutes.

Yes, batteries are standardized, but at the moment changing a car battery can be done by a mechanic or a hobbyist with enough knowledge, but to be actually markable, it has to be like changing batteries in cameras or notebooks. Actualy, test installations already exist in Israel, but there is still a technician necessary. On a different note, electricity is more expensive than oil for the time being...

look up 'betterplace'. The simple solution is simply replace batts at a service station. You don't own the batts, you pay for the lease of them when you 'fill up'. That way it's exactly like a normal car in operation. Batts are standardised, recycling/servicing is centralised and the range is such that you would very rarely have to do it anyway. The process is automated and only takes a few minutes.I find it odd that people complain about elec, when gas has exactly the same problems :)

makes for an easy 2wd to 4wd upgrade path! That would make manufacturing a lot cheaper as different chassis and transmissions wouldn't be needed

they aren't quiet. Modern cars are just as quiet. Who walks onto a road without looking. No soul? Erm... I love how they're totally efficient. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess :)

why not try adding eddy current braking system, based on Lenz's law, which dont even need a feedback from the tachogen fitted in the tyre!

Maybe start using nuclear batteries in electric cars? Drive a million miles with one battery!

seimens could make a fortune if they manufactured these motors for conversion kits.. they could make the electronic power control units to match.. but then the oil companies would buy em out and close down the company

What about the shock of road vibration on the motor. It does not seem like the motors are very well protected in the wheel.
