Yeah, that's true.But in one of the pieces my band is playing, the thirds and seconds have melody a lot of the time and the first are sitting on the same note for a while.So it all evens out eventually...

My band teacher tends to tell the third clarinets to play louder.He tells them, "The only difference between a third part and a first part is the register it's in. Third clarinets are just as important, if not more important, as first clarinets; they just play in a lower register."Just saying. (:
