just coz dolphins have saved a few people from sharks doesnt make them unedible. Afterall, it just a swimming mammal and has been eaten by indigenous people for thousands of years. I am positive dolphins would taste delicious on a BBQ or oven cooked!!

We are governed by how we evolved, we can direct focus, but why we direct our focus on certain things is governed by our genes. Ethics is linked to evolution. We evolved into creatures that need to stick together to survive, and so we evolved strong emotional ties to other humans, it spills over to our pets. I don't decide to care for people I just do, sometimes i wish i didn't, it's no choice. Humans are born with a load of information, the stuff we have to learn is language, maths and science.

That is absolutely false. We are not governed by how we evolved. Evolution is out of the field of ethics. Human beings have the faculty of volition, (the ability to direct one's focus), and thus, have the ability to set their ends and means. Men are born tabula rasa; man's mind, when first born, contains no knowledge, and must act in order to acquire it. Evolution only sets the biological needs for life. It's his mind which determines the importance of these needs and the means to fulfill them.

Well, without a metaphysics that affirms that humans have the faculty of volition and epistemology that affirms that man can act rationally, the whole field of ethics is nullified by default. If man does not have free will and cannot guide his actions by principles, no morality is possible.

Thank YOU! I am finding the whole argument quite pointless. I agree 100% with you. there is no "chemical imbalance" that make people inclined to be altruistic. Altruism is a sense of duty, depending on the ethics and values an individual has.

hehehe. I think mank's response is funny because he/she is warping the meaning of altruism with Pseudo-intellectual grabage. They need a dictionary. i personally thought your comment was relevant to the dolphin's rescue in human context because yes, altruism is commendable. Well said adrastea
