Whe using a white background always illuminate the background to maintain the whiteness and separate the subject, place a strobe or your lights off to the side( 1 each ) and aim them at the background, it prevents the color from spreading and keeps your whites white.

Well... im no expert but it sounds that you are taking a picture in a well lit place. All these numbers change depending on where you shoot.. make a trial an error and youll get it...
