Its debatable. But hearing that Smeyer didn't even read/watch any sort of vampire-related medium before she wrote Twilight would have meant she probably would have never had heard of the series.Beside, vampire/human romances aren't something new.But this [Vampire Diaries] looks like its promising to be less whacked up than Twilight is. Period.

Wrong. It's the other way around AND this show is way better than the Twilight movies so far. Better script too. I am a Twilight fan as well and being a fan of both, I truly recommend you watch Vampire Diaries.
