Those knee blocks are only a result of the technique performed before them - for example a cut to the inside of the opponents leg (in armored katas) or knee. Not much to say about blocking with the edge of the blade, since that is the only way to do it (or would anyone prefere to block the sharp hardened edge with the soft part of his sword - also this way your block will not be defensive in nature, allowing you to attack)

tetro, this is one of the oldest schools teaching theories and principles of kenjutsu based on actual use. You only see the movement in kata but no explanation of the technique. Theory talking, at the point of life and death combat, what is advisable for the blade's well being is not the highest consideration, surviving is. I don't know the style, but the technique might be a simulation of loosing footing and having to react in whats seen as the most expedient to survive the situation.

I saw in this video Lowered to one knee blocks with the edge of the ken not advisable if you want to cut with that blade very long. Add to those lowered knee blocks a stab hindering the opponent painful and deep enough to pull out chop off his hands winning the fight no need to kill. it was done three times and it's a block with the edge of the sword. sliding it foward will minimize blade damage and allow for the technique. Now he can't kill himself no hands total dishonor, worse than death.

Agreed. Budo is not entertainment. You're looking at killing techniques.

kendo uses shinai, bamboo swords. and it's the closest thing to kenjustu that has "real" fighting, except it's not real, it's a sport, there are rules and points given to certain hits. kenjutsu is a martial art to train one in the japanese way of the sword. the key word there is "train" so obviously there won't be a lotta fighting involved, there'll be choreography and repetition, the only ways to perfect one's performance. what you describe as real fighting is actually sport

This is showing the kenjutsu forms from one of the oldest Japanese martial art school: Tenshin shoden katori Shinto ryu. Their katas are actually quite long, and the seem to repeat them on and on. And even if this clip maybe is speeded up (i dunno), they do work at a furious speed!!but it does feel a bit endless.

It would be better without music, without high speed motion (this isn't the real speed) and respecting the order of the kata. That is, this is too bad...

I think it's hard although using a blunt steel sword. Putting two person on a fight without plot can easily hurt because you can't say you can control and feel your sword every time while evading and try to strike back.

Well how the hell is this kenjutsu if you're not fighting? I don't mean killing, you could use non lethal swords but if you're just touching swords then it's pretend kenjutsu. You should be fighting not putting on a performance.

How do you expect someone to do kenjutsu without being choreographed? With suicide candidates? Plus it would be 2 people going at each other with swords, would be very uniteresting fight that would be over in less than 3 seconds and only understandable by experts.

I wish somebody would do a real samurai fight like the kenjutsu equivalent of fencing. This is good but it's choreographed if I'm not mistaken. Not real at all. It's stupid actually.
