Free stroke is when you pick the strings and after picking the string for the note you are sounding, your finger continues simply freely into the air. This is how you are probably playing if you have just begun. Rest stroke is basically used to create a louder tone. It is called rest stroke because after you pluck the string, your finger "rests" of moves into the next lower string instead of going off into the air as in the free stroke. This gives you more power and a louder sounding note.

This is one of the first pieces I learned some 20 years ago . simple but beautiful when done well which you do . I've just started playing again after 10 years ( finger injury ) , You've made me want to play it again . I heard Segovia play this in the early 70's .

Very well played, I learnt to play this a few years ago but I don't think I ever made it sound that good, well done.

Thanks for the question askthechild. The video is 14 years old so I cant remember my exact approach at the time. I think I was playing mostly rest stoke on the melody, but not exclusively. In any event, it is probably a good idea to work the piece both ways trying to get the free stroke as loud and robust as the rest stroke. I hope that this helps, thanks for listening!Luther

Are you playing this all free stroke or rest stroke?

I have a 1981 1a. Your guitar has that distinctive Ramirez tone. Very nice.
