I just absolutely love this... wish I could someday play this :) And Ferras is unbelievable, his version is so moving... And Sibelius is simply marvellous, proud to come from Finland :)

bleak?i've come across this comment from many people.i just don't get it.how is it bleak?mind you i am a very glass-empty, pessimistic, nothing ever matters, kind of guy... one would expect that me listening to something as bleak as they say this is should push me way beyond slit-my-wrists mode pessimism.but it doesn't.sure, it's not "weee :D :D :D happy" like vivaldi... but it oozes lifeforce

Certified Intergalactic! The Ferras Star! I credit Ferras with having the best rendition of the Sibelius Violin Concerto as a whole. His 2nd movement is unequaled. Also this 1st movement and the 3rd.

max, this is the first time i heard christian play sibleius and you are right: he nails the bleak scandinavian atmosphere that sibelius was trying to create and convey.before this, i thought nigel kennedy's version ruled but no...i have a new gold standard: christian ferras'! bravo! bravo! and rest in peace mr ferras!

The vibrato isn't for show. It's the sound that's produced. Every good instrumentalist, or singer has their own style of doing vibrato, and I like this guy's style of vibrato.

the vibrato might add to this piece, but you have to admit it is a bit irritating to look at. it does seem a bit tense, even it probably isn't for him.

This is the best version for me and I am also a Scandinavian with a knowledge of Sibelius and other greats from Scandinavia!Ferras does his lifes best performance here!!Movement 1,2 and 3 are equally moving! Oistrakh comes close, but for me Ferras "nailed it""

talk about a violin concerto that does not concentrate on the violin

How about that. A violin concerto centred around the violin.

This piece is somewhat disatisfying to me because the first movement is all about the violin and the orchestra just offers some background chords and some breaks with some dramatic stuff so to me it is like the orchestration does not equal in difficulty and complexity to the violin part. The violin is doing all this work and the orchestra is just humming. I was playing this piece so I wanted to hear the orchestration and it just does not work for me. Right now my fav. piece is Wieniawski no. 1.

The vibrato is what adds intensity to the piece. I love it.

Great playing, of course, but I hate his vibrato. I think it is way too fast and tense.
