This movie is a portrayal of schizotypy .. Wonka possess a large majority of traits possessed by those with diagnosed schizophrenia.

The cumulative effect isn't pretty. Nor is it kooky, funny, eccentric or even mildly interesting. Indeed, throughout his fey, simpering performance, Depp seems to be straining so hard for weirdness that the entire enterprise begins to feel like those excruciating occasions when your parents tried to be hip. And aside from Burton's usual eye-popping direction, the film's strenuous efforts at becoming a camp classic eventually begin to wear thin.

It's hard to notice at first when watching the original, especially as a child, but Wilde's Wonka is EXTREMELY sarcastic. Just thought I'd point that out... :P

Some people would have had to though because otherwise they could have ended up making the film exactly the same, which would have sort of defied the point.

I get it, but I know that at least the scriptwriter didn't watch the original. He had neverseen it, and when he asked whether he should watcn it Burton told him not to, so they could get an entirely fresh perspective.

In a sense it is though, because the book has been made into a film before (Willy Wonka...) and they have decided to make a film of the book once again. As well as this, they have no doubt looked at the original film to see what they can do to make this version different and new compared. It wouldn't have been ignored. No doubt if the original did what they wished to do with this, this film would not have been made. Do you get what I'm trying to say? I found it a bit hard to explain.

This is *not* a remake of the old film. It's an adaptation of the original book, and it's actually much closer to the source material.

It's not a remake. >_> It's an adaptation of the original book, and a much closer one, actually.

I decided to watch the trailer to this because it sort of reminded me of Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland coming out next year. Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors of all time, but I have to admit, I did not like him in this movie at all. He gave Willy Wonka a very weird, sarcastic attitude, which can be detected from the trailer alone. The original is much, much better than the remake.
