What kind of movie is this ? How is it called in english or the original title?? I didn't know that. I like Barfly, but to compare the interpretations in that film with the ones in a Ferreri movie (who tended to the abstract) is misleading. It's apples and watermelons; Actor's Studio vs. neorrealism (and Ferreri came from neorrealism; but, like Fellini, he created his own universe later on).Gazzara is a fine, terrific actor and, IMO, one has to see the compleat film in order to appreciate his performance. But, I repeat, this is not cinema about acting.

I think you're missing the point. Ferreri was never about the actors: for him, actors were (or, like Hitchcock would have said: should be treated like) "cattle". For him, close ups were rare; his films were about the grotesque side of men, disregarding histrionism.
