It's a very familiar environment for him. For example, he is the former creative director for the world-reknowned St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, among other former titles. He knows the audience, and he knows that what is good will translate across all types of people -- including stiff white people, as you say.

thanks for clearing that up, but he is equally credible in both areas. we all know from this video and his various CDs that he is a singer; however, he is not given credibility on directing INSTRUMENTAL ensembles off of his voice. That is laughable. He's just multi-talented. I've had a masterclass with him, and his conducting chops stand alone. He's amazing in both aspects independently. If what you thought were true, Pavarotti would've conducted as a part-time gig as well! Ridiculous!

he's not a conductor.....hes a singer but he is so good with his voice and music that people ask him to conduct orchestras and so he does that as like a part time thing......but he is a singer by profession

he just practiced and worked on his voice until he could get it to go extremely low and extremely high

he is a conductor by profession, so he likes proper audience behavior during his performances. They're not comatose. They're just doing what he asks.
