The moment a people begin to think of themselves as better than another people, they begin to think they have a willful right to subjugate other peoples, hence, the notions of Black power and white power.. many non-Blacks don't recognize the difference between the two. The Black power movement is about strength in unity to uplift a people and make them confident in themselves and even included Whites. While white power is about unifying to exact dominance over others and excludes non-whites.

If you think about it, it's really not even about race. there appears to be some part of human nature that connects us not just with people but the people most like us. Sticking to subgroups is part of human nature because historically we know that there has not always been confidence in general human grouping; Wars and genocide have existed for thousands of years. So, I don't think there is necessarily an issue with being prideful of your race the problem is the notion of racial superiority.

In a world w/o the social construction of race, your idea works. However, as it is, minorities investing in general human integrity while the power structure of a dominant race reigns can only spell disaster for the minority. Blacks in particular tend to dissociate with the successes of others and especially whites; as I was growing up, I could not relate to Bill Gates but I could relate to Nas or Malcolm X. They look like me, come from the same culture and therefore make better role models.

Race is a social construct, a cultural invention, why would you want to attach pride to something that puts up barriers and stirs discrimination?Why not be prideful of human integrity, ingenuity, and innovation?

So we shouldn't be proud of who we are? I shouldn't be proud of the accomplishments of my people? this approach is too individualistic and unrealistic. If we universalized this concept, that means that people should not serve in the military for nationalistic pride; people wouldn't be able to use the accomplishments of others such as their forebears to catapult their own success. If it were not for this sort of pride we wouldn't have the minds of MLK, Malcolm X, Garvey and a sleuth of others.
