In both cases it was to counter the USSR, our new enemy, wasn't it? And also, since those two countries and peoples would eventually revive themselves, we wanted to be right there overseeing them. Or so I gather -

I'm talking too much - my original point is simply that it is unseemly and improper for Americans to gleefully exult in our use of superior force in WW2. It had to be done, but it is not anything to gloat over. Adn some of the video clips on the B-29 bomber seemed to have that sort of feeling to them, so I had to comment.Have an excellent day!

True - though a people can be motivated to war if they are threatened, or if they feel overcrowded by surrounding nations or that they have a just cause to spread out (cultural/racial superiority has been touted as a just cause of course) -- then once the war is begun, the soldiers have to suffer all the harm. As long as one side is winning, it tends to "enjoy" the war. Or ferocity tends to rule, so that atrocities are committed. "War is politics by other means", "war is all hell" - both true

Yes, it can be complicated. Asia had a right to self control, but Japan went too far, especially against China. At that point, their proclamation of liberation became just a ruse. And yes, humanity can be a casualty of war. A nation must be careful not to lose its just cause for battle. A just cause permits entry and continuation of fighting, but once the cause is no longer there, war must stop. War itself is not something to enjoy, and I believe most people feel this way.

and of course, the individual soldier is fighting for home and country and honor and to keep from letting his comprades down. Once a war starts, it plays out, and everyone does what they are compelled to do, and people lose humanity as they go. So many young men sacrified horribly, so that one people can thrive at the expense of others, or to prevent the spread. It's all biological, really, at bottom - we all want our own kind to succeed - but we're all human, tho propaganda says otherwise...

It gets complicated, doesn't it - Western nations exploited Asia, so if Asian nations decide to take control, is that wrong? But the Japanese "greater co-prosperity sphere" was in fact an empire, with slave labor taken from the conquered peoples. The US tried to stop Japanese influence by restricting access to oil, and Japan decided to attack. In general, the aggressor is considered the bad guy, especially if that nation is attempting to conquer & subjugate other nations. -

If the enemy is "evil", there is nothing wrong with hating (as long as it's not taken to the extreme, like torture or inhumane treatment) them. A war in self defense, where peaceful negotiation has failed, is a just war. It doesn't mean people like, or that they want to go through with it. It just means it was the best option at the time.

Oh, agreed - the "Rape of Nanking", the Manchurian biowarfare & extreme medical experimentation, the Death Marches, notorious prison camps, the entire Bushido code where virtually anything you do to win is justified -- yep, Imperial Japan brought it upon themselves -- it can even be said that fewer Japanese died as a result of the atom bombings than would have if the US had invaded the home islands - but it's always best for the victor to stop hating as soom as possible, it's soul-destroying

Sorry, I wasn't clear - I meant to give a sense of irony & disapproval of war in general -- sometimes, Americans can be excessively triumphant about how American is so mighty -- my feeling is that it's just a damned shame that cultures clash, regimes become hostile, & all the young men of both sides get sent off to kill each other. When a war is won, the joy should be that the fighting has stopped, not that the enemy is beaten. But hating the enemy is part of the war effort - that's too bad

yes - though it doesn't mean we can't do better still - we aren't necessarily perfect simply because our founding fathers were smart enough to devise a well-reasoned Constitution and our grandfathers fought like hell to defend the nation -- we ourselves have to strive to be the best we can be in each succeeding generation (sez me, slouched at a PC workstation) :)

interesting sound track (0:20 - 0:38) -- so, we "fucked" the Japanese with B-29s? More like Imperial Japan awakened a sleeping giant, who then tore them a new asshole --
