if you read the book word to word, you'll find that the slugworth thing is mentioned once in the place where they see the gobstoppers and where Beauregarde becomes a blueberry.

This is an inciteful video. Definitely interesting to watch. You haven't said anything to change my mind, though. I love this movie. We all have our own tastes, I guess.

Ok. I'm sorry if you got to see that last comment. You make good arguements... but I grew up with Willy Wonka and thought it to be completely magical. I didn't read the Roald Dahl books until this year. And I also love them. Willy Wonka is a dream for me. I would die protecting it. Books cannot be written word for word onto screens. 7 hours long if so. Books have their own voice while screen has theirs. Also, Roald Dahl (the book author/creator) did write the screenplay.

Now, I've always liked the original version of Chocolate Factory more, but I also pretty much didn't mind Tim Burton's version (although it pales in comparison).............and it's a hell of a lot better than the awful Nightmare Before Christmas, at least!

If you're able to read the original book, then why would you want the film to be word for word, scene for scene. You might as well stick with the book.

I agree, the 1971 version was good, but not a great adaptation. Tim Burton's version is by far superior!

I'm sorry. I can't agree with this review any less. It's like saying the latest Batman was awesome and the original with Romero was tish. They were each their own entity. If you don't like musicals, you won't like the original. Me, I grew up with films paced like the original, and I still love that incarnation. The new one is truer to the book, but so what? The original stood on its own and is a classic for a reason. Because most enjoyed it for what it was: just a fun/odd bit of entertainment.

Yes- everyone is entitled to their opinion! I don't understand why someone gave this comment a thumbs down.

Yeah, I think they felt they needed to add a sentimental, sappy song- so, insert "Cheer Up, Charlie." It's not that bad, just slow. I think it shows the importance in how it helps to cheer people up and give them hope. And, Candy Man is a good song- just suffers a sub-par performance/production in the movie. The Oompa Loompa songs all being musically similar ties together the misbehaviors of all the kids. 1 kid dispatched? Here comes an Oompa Loopa song!

Yes- the backstory to me ruined the movie. Well, that and the dreadful songs. Do people who like the 2005 version like those songs better as well? And to me Depp's portrayal of Wonka was way off. Wonka was certainly eccentric but not an emotionally challenged weirdo. I think Burton & co. tried to fill in details of Wonka's life when he should have been left a total enigma. And what was with that dumb puppet show in the beginning? The Willy Wonka theme was bad, even. I could go on and on-

So, you're saying the 2005 film version is more true to the book? Seriously? Sure, it's got the nutcracking scene (and more in-depth story of the Oompa Loompas, but what the heck was all the backstory garbage of Wonka? They frickin made the movie more about Willy Wonka and his dad dentist. The book was not about the importance of family- it was more about teaching manners and respect. I like how they added the theme of honesty and being true to your word with the whole Slugworth thing.

Dude, movies based on books are normally and are meant to be different. But i agree that the book is best. Also, they made another version of the movie in 2005. It is much more horrible.

Thank you!I thought I was the only one who hated that original version. There was so much wrong with that film! The Oompa-Loompa songs were dreadful, as was Charlie. Gene Wilder was pretty good, but otherwise, it was an awful movie.
