Video: Amazing Cicada life cycle - Sir David Attenborough's Life in the Undergrowth - BBC wildlife
Author: B
Description: After lying beneath the earth for up to 17 years, cicadas venture above ground as a massive group to shed their larvae shells, sprout wings and sing for a mate. Sir David Attenborough demonstrates how easy it is to hypnotise a male cicada with the click of his fingers in this amazing wildlife video from BBC animal show 'Life in the Undergrowth'.

Well i assume they must only mate for one period of time in their life. So as baby cicadas are born from this cycle, they wait underground for 17years and come out, where the mating cycle begins again. So the way i interpreted it was the mating cycle for the cicada species is once every 17 years.

Wouldn't there be a new batch every year? Each 17 years old?

Trouble is Shinku, singing for a mate would eliminate about 85% of tone deaf men from the gene pool! Mind you, it would give us guys who can carry a tune a much clearer run at the beauties! As for singing during the actual sexual act, well that would depend on your tastes in music. What if you like Madame Butterfly, & he likes to scream some heavy metal number from Megadeath? 'Get off! Get off me right NOW!! lol
