bopsybunny: No one should be ashamed to be called anything BUT i recall being told many times during my 47 yrs in London. "You MAY be a British 'subject ' BUT you'll NEVER be English!" If you're told this long enough you begin to believe it. Back then it was an insult but today it means nothing. I dare say Alistair's dad was told similar. That's why he probably thought he was protecting him. Ironic isn't it?

remixguru3; Absolutely. I fully understand McGowans dilemma. Growing up in 60s Britain was difficult if you were anglo-indian.Alot of us were psychologically damaged mainly because we weren't accepted inspite of being Christian and English speaking. This puts paid to the theory that if an Indian is willing to speak English & "integrate" he WILL be accepted. Light skinned a/i's did better .

silkysunshine: i agree with you. I'm a/indian also and it's something that was kept secret back in the early days. To be "chee-chee" was considered worse than full breed Indian. Many of the lighter skinned ones passed off as Scottish or even Maltese...anything but Indian. Hollywood actress Merle Oberon hid her own mother from view and passed her off as her "maid" just to keep her acting career. Even Cliff Richard says he's Scottish.

Thanks for replying. Totally agree - of course it's not his fault. His father kept his heritage a secret. What a terrible thing to do to your own son.

yes probably he lost his history because of the racist english way. You either become white or your a foreigner? its not his fault though
